“Zen does not confuse spirituality with thinking about God while one is peeling potatoes. Zen spirituality is just to peel the potatoes.” -Alan Watts
What if money was no object?
Do you want to be happy? Of course you do. Mr. Alan Watt’s the ambassador of Zen in the West has some wise advice for all of us to follow.
First thing you need to ask yourself with a sincere heart is how would you want to spend your life on earth if money was no object?
Would you want to be an artist, a writer, a teacher, a scuba diver, or an explorer?…What is that makes you feel truly alive?…
Okay, once you really figure out what you want to do in life, focus only on doing that and forget about the money. Not that we don’t need to earn money, just that it doesn’t determine what you choose to do in your life.
Once you identify your absolute needs, which for most people are very few, you will be able to purse your hearts true desires. It’s a shame that in today’s world we don’t really give our young adults a chance at answering these questions for themselves. We give them society’s blueprint to follow. Go to college, get a job, get a mortgage, rack up some debt, raise a family. By the time they try to answer these questions it may be too late, you are a slave to the system. A very unfortunate reality for the consumer based society we live in. The machine needs you to just be another widget that doesn’t ask too many questions and just performs its job.
Once you figure you what you want to do. Eat, sleep, and breath it until you master it to the best of your ability.
Eventually you will possess something of value that others will happily pay for. Mr. Watt’s gives us a simple but powerful message. If you take it to heart this is all you will need to guide you while your alive. It’s usually us who over complicate things. We fall victim to society’s conditioning that instill fear in us as soon as we try to break away from the pack.
Explore. Dream. Discover.
